Ferris
After losing Oscar suddenly at the end of 2008, I had no desire to get another dog any time soon. However a friend of mine spotted Ferris’ litter, a Sloughi x litter, and showed me some pictures. I still had no interest but a series of events kept bringing me back to these puppies and after finding out a little more about the Sloughi sire I decided to take the last red male puppy. I also managed to persuade my friend to take his sister!
I picked Ferris and his sister, Zimba up in January 2009, they were 8 weeks old. The first night they were here I thought I’d made a dreadful mistake, they howled every time I tried to leave them to go to bed and I ended up wandering around my house all night with the pair of them swinging off my pyjama legs. However Zimba was on her travels the very next day for her long trip up to her home in Scotland. And once they were separated thankfully they became normal cuddly puppies rather than the howling little devils of that first night!
I hadn’t had a puppy since Jack and had forgotten just how much work they were. That said Ferris was clean indoors within a week and really liked his sleep. He got a little agitated as time went on being left indoors while we all went for a walk but as soon as he was vaccinated he was out in the big wide world.
He is a very sociable dog with other canines. He has always been shy of people though and can still get a little alarmed if people startle him.
Edie and Jake thought he was an alien when he first arrived. Edie wouldn’t even sit in the same room with him for the first couple of days. Surprisingly Jake warmed to him first and has now found a new lease of life with his friendship with Ferris. He mimics Ferris’ puppy play and is displaying behaviours I have never seen in him before. It is wonderful to see!
Edie finally came round to Ferris; they enjoy great chase games on the heath.
In hindsight I took Ferris on for all the wrong reasons, mainly born out of my grief over losing Oscar. However I’m glad that I did, he has been a real positive addition to our household and I hope we have many happy years together.
