Leo's Story

Leo at BathLeo is a 10 year old Sloughi who was taken by RSPCA inspectors in June 2005 from his former owner after being found living in a much to be desired situation.  He went to Bath Cats and Dogs Home and was rehomed in September 2005.  After a few weeks of settling into his new home, in January 2006, Leo writes to us with an update of how he is doing!

Hello everyone, and a happy new year from Leo!!

Well, so THAT's what Christmas is all about eh?.. A great big tree, and lots of lovely shiny things for me to pull off and play with when  mom and dad arn't looking....although they usually catch me in the act because I don't like moving about too fast!  I spend most of the day - in fact, I would spend all of the day if I could -on the sofa, with several grunts of approval when my family come and sit next to me for a cuddle.  Every now and then, my Lurcher brother Suma likes to come and sit with me, and I like to snuggle up - but sometimes I do try and sit on him as I get on the settee backwards, which he doesn't like!

Anyway, my new home is very lovely and I think I am used to everything, even that hoover which I did try and play with at first, but it is not a toy as mummy says!  I like most things about my new house, but I am still not sure just how beneficial this morning walk business really is for me!  I know Suma loves going and jumps about when they get the leads, but I just try and stay very still on the settee, but it's no good, they put me on the lead and off we go!  Actually, its not too bad in the field where we can run around, but I do prefer to stay next to daddy and let all the others do the running.  I am just keeping an eye on the place, know what I mean?

If I get the chance, I do like to sneak upstairs, because Charlie has got these lovely Homer Simpson slippers and they are great toys - especially if I can get them from his room and run into mum and dad's room and play with them on the bed!

A couple of weeks ago, I wasn't very well at all.  I went to the doctors (I think mum and dad call it a 'vets'...) and he says I have a poorly liver, which is all due to how I used to have to live.  But they have given me some tablets which mum hides in my food - I know they are there, but I eat them anyway! - and now I feel so much better.  So much so in fact, that I can resume my normal duties of either lying on the settee or barking very loudly at those funny little old ladies as they walk past!  Mum and dad think it is embarrassing because I am a big dog and they might think I am scary, but everyone knows I am just a big softie who has got lots and lots of love.  But I just don't like old ladies!

LeoMum and dad are trying to win a couple of settees on ebay right now, and I am rooting for them.  If we can get this great big three seater for me and Suma, then mum and dad can have the little one!  Finally, mum and dad went to BCDH to see Kirsty (my old carer) but she had the day off, but they did manage to see Topsy.  I know mum wants to bring Topsy here, but she already has a reserve.  I don't mind either way, because I get the big settee and everyone else has to make way for me anyway, ha!

Right better go, I think there is a little old lady coming up the street.....Lots of Love from Leo

Since my last update another year has gone past in my new home.  I am such a happy and relaxed boy now (the rest of the household think I'm too relaxed as I tend to hog the sofa most of the day - but hey, what self-respecting Sloughi wouldnt given half the chance!).

My initial write up when I was being rehomed said I couldnt be rehomed with children under 10 years old.  The nice people at the rescue centre had to say this as they didnt really know how I would be in a home environment.  I live with 2 children now aged 10 and 11 and have proved to be an excellent family pet - they have their friends over all the time and I just love all the attention I get, lots of pats and cuddles.  In addition we have extended family who live with 2 children aged 7 and 4.  These children used to be very wary of dogs but thanks to mine and Victoria 's laid back nature - and despite our big size, they are now learning to overcome their fear.  See I have a very busy lifestyle with all these children to take care of - I really do need all that extra sofa time to recooperate after a hard day of being fussed and adored.
