Nancy's Story

NancyNancy was taken into rescue in 2003 at the age of 11 and rehomed immediately to a quiet home in the countryside.   She had never lived in a home environment before and so was initially terrified of even entering the house.  She was coaxed slowly and gently on that first day through the front door with small  pieces of cheese and although it took over an hour to get her through the front door she eventually came into the house, and pretty much decided that was where she wanted to stay.

It was thought unlikely that Nancy had been socialised with other animals other than the sloughis she was living with before.  She now had a new home with a Bulldog, a Yorkshire Terrier, a Miniature Poodle, a Bichon puppy and a variety of cats.  However this timid gentle girl never had a problem with her new housemates (despite the Bichon puppy desperately wanting her to play with him!).

Nancy was extremely worried about the world, it took months for her to accept her new owner.  She never once approached her for fuss but would like to sit next to her on the sofa to be stroked.   She was extremely agrophobic and would not go out for walks, she would potter into the back field to do what she needed to do in the morning and then came straight back in again to the sofa.

She was extremely nervous of passing anyone at the doorway so her new owner had to always keep the access clear so that she could get in and out without worry.  She also was always extremely anxious about food and would 'chatter' to her owner nervously while breakfast and dinner were being made.  However she was never aggressive about her food, or anything else for that matter.  She was a truly gentle soul.

Dear Nancy was in her new home for less than a year before being diagnosed with cancer.  Despite her aloof nature and reluctance to join in with any of the 'usual' doggy activities in the house she was sadly missed by her owner who in that short space of time completely fell in love with her sloughi.   So much so that in 2005 when a number of other sloughis came into rescue she adoped Mini-Me .
