Tribute to Oscar (17 March 1997 - 28 December 2008)

This has taken me a year to create, mainly because I just could not find the words to describe what Oscar meant to me. In typical Sloughi fashion he reserved his true self to me alone, and although others caught glimpses of what made him so special to me, our friendship was a private affair. So I decided that instead of trying to put it into print, it will remain just that. Something unique between him and I, something that a year on I still miss so very much, his humour, his huge personality and the joy he brought me every single day.

For his tribute, I want to take a 1937 quote from text by Miss F Turcat 'The Sloughi, a Lord Among Dogs', published in The Sloughi 1852 - 1952 by M Dominique Crapon de Caprona.

"The Sloughi....a superb dog, but ....isn't he stupid? How many times will you have to listen to this sentence? Of your interlocutor, you will ask if he has owned a Sloughi: he will invariably answer: 'no, never', for he who has owned, only once, a dog of this breed, will never ask you such a question!

Under the appearance of indifference, the Sloughi hides a sensitive heart and, if he is not lavishing attention to strangers, he reserves for his master a deep bond which he expresses with displays of friendship sometimes exuberant. I have seen Sloughis rolling on the floor and howling with the happiness upon seeing their master after a long absence; others let themselves die because they were seperated from you"

He was my sunshine, my inspiration and my friend. Sleep tight Oscar, we miss you very much x
